Complex Tip Questions

Who decided that the standard tip percentage is 5%?

When was this decided? Because this my friends is an important historical date for waiters/waitresses and customers alike.

And while we're on the topic, why do some restaurants add in a gratuity of 13% or even 15% without consulting the customer?

What type of rating scale are they using when the word "gratuity", which has 5 more letters than the word "tip", automatically carries with it 8 to 10 more percentage points?

In that case I wish to leave an "a" at the end of my meal because it's the shortest word in the language and, correct me if I'm wrong, would allow me to leave just 1.25% of the total bill. Thank you.

Bah to tipping, bah I say! There are so many bad waiters out there that I don't even know what is acceptable anymore. Up here they suggest taxes....or 15 per cent. Most of the time, that's way too much!

Tip stands for "To insure promptness". It was meant as a means to secure good service a couple of centuries ago, and has now grown into a custom that puts the pressure on the client, who looks cheap if they do not leave an acceptable tip, rather than the server, who is supposed to earn that additional bonus to their salery.

Where I come from, the standard is 15% if service was adequate, and higher, if it was steller. However, the government taxes servers based on the 15% estimate. I wonder who is profitting most from all this...
